Symbolism of Anchors

While an anchor on a tombstone can symbolize a mariner, often it refers not to an occupation but instead to a steadfast belief. That is, the idea of one's faith being anchored by Christ or their soul being anchored in the Lord. This symbolism is bound even moreso by the anchors vague resemblance to a cross.

This symbolism is from a beautifully ornate stone in White Eyes Cemetery, Coshocton, Ohio.  The name appears to be Stella M. Durbin or Durrin (1873-1886). Photos by LSPratt.
